HOLLOW EARTH

HD video, 2013, 22 min

The Hollow Earth film combines research materials from 7 different active mines located in the north, landscape shots and historical, archival footage. It’s edited to emphasize the process of drilling through layers of geo-strata; from aerial perspectives, followed by surface mining and subtarranean depths. The soundtrack is composed by the Tromsø-based group Animals (Simon Daniel Tegnander and Ørjan Amundsen) and includes field recordings and samples that make up an audio-landscape of dream-trance-contemplation and crystals. Shown as part of Artists’ Film International Season 7, organized by Whitechapel Gallery, and also Tromsø International Film Festival, Kaunas International Film Festival, Magneeti Finland, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, amongst others.

In this video you ́re moved through the dark pulse of the westcoast, through salt flats and spa therapies, to the architecture of Las Vegas and its surrounding suburbs of squat- ted mining plots. The feminine body mines pleasure and seduction within man-made environments, referencing the relationship of the body with the political, the social, and with culture as a whole.

Filmed at the lowest dry point on earth, Your Body Is a Mine explores the nexus surrounding the Dead Sea; the salt industry, commercial spa tourism, and the geo-politics of the region through a subjective point of view. This short work focuses on the power of human agency that is conveyed ever more intensely within the context of performative interven- tions amongst the most man-made environment.

'Tidal Body' is a graphic score that explores concepts of contemporary cartography, buoyancy, and the ocean as a sonic space. The ocean's properties and processes are mostly known today through distributed sensor networks. Using this data as a starting point for a composition - 'Tidal Body' incorporates local notations such as tidal rhythms, elemental swirls and eddies, maritime industry and NMC’s own iconography.
